Gjalt Huppes, Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML), Leiden University, Netherlands


Gjalt Huppes is head of the Department Industrial Ecology at CML, Leiden University. He has a Master degree in Political Science and Economics at Amsterdam University and a PhD on environmental policy at Leiden University.

His interest are in modelling for sustainability decision support, with a focus on LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), MFA (Material Flow Analysis) and on the newly developing methods of EEIOA (Environmentally Extended Input Output Analysis) for sustainability evaluation of technologies, pioneered at CML. For decision support, the development of practical measures relating the economic, environmental and social aspects of sustainability is essential, with eco-efficiency as one main parameter.

He has been organising several international conferences on the subjects and publishes on the subject regularly. He was scientific coordinator of the EU FP6 CALCAS project on improved sustainability modelling, and scientific responsible for the development of environmentally extended input-output analysis in the EU FP6 EXIOPOL project, and project leader of the EU FP6 ECODRIVE project on indicators for eco-innovation. He is coordinator of the National Science Foundation project BioSustain, on developing strategies for guiding Industrial Biotechnology (including biofuels) in a sustainable direction.
